ARTIST STATEMENT
"My dance work pairs quirky, spirited movement with deep sociological investigations. I bring focus to U.S.-Cuban relations, and histories of revolution in Latin America. Through a deconstruction of physical tension in space, I reveal political tensions in our world, and investigate governing ideologies. In contrast to my politically-focused endeavors, I craft idiosyncratic, humorous celebrations of life. Fascinated by the specificity of bird-like movements, I create odes to chickens and peacocks--postmodern coops of zany gestures and flirtatious struts. The polyrhythmic and percussive impulses in my dancing reflect my background in rhythm tap and cello, and a love of intricate orchestral arrangements." -Augie Sherman
